We're on a journey

A journey to become a more sustainable and environmentally responsible

The natural beauty and biodiversity of New Zealand is celebrated the world
over, and we consider ourselves extremely lucky to be able to enjoy it on a
daily basis. We’re determined to do our bit to protect and care for our unique
environment by creating experiences and escapes with an eco-conscious

From our online store to our bach at Waihi Beach, we’re making every effort
to minimise our impact. We’re learning as we go and we know we won’t get it
right 100% of the time, but we are 100% committed to trying to do better.
Because we believe that making memories shouldn’t cost the earth.

Global goals

As well as doing what we can for our local environment, our sustainability
policy has a global emphasis, too.
To focus our efforts, we’re using the United Nations Sustainable Development
Goals framework. Set in 2015 as part of the UN’s 2030 agenda, the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 interlinked goals that form a
blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all.

We’ve honed in on three SDGs that we feel One Fyfe can make a meaningful
contribution to right now:
Goal 13: combat climate change and its impacts.
Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine
Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial
ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and
halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

Put simply, we are committing to doing our bit towards the global goals for
climate action, life below water and life on land.

How are we making a difference?

We’ve taken these goals from the world’s to-do list and put them right at the
top of ours. Before we do anything as a business, we consider whether it’s in
line with our sustainability goals. If the answer is no, we think again.

We’re also taking proactive steps to reduce our global impact:

✔ We’re proud to have attained Climate Positive certification for our Business Operations and believe we are the first holiday accommodation in the world to do so. To gain this certification, we partnered with EKOS to measure and offset 120% of our carbon footprint for our 2019-2020 year with certified carbon credits. These certified carbon credits are sourced from projects that grow and protect forests in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands and help to deliver climate resilience, waterways protection, erosion control, biodiversity conservation and community economic development.

✔ We’re a member of 1% For The Planet. This means we donate 1%
of our gross sales each year to highly vetted environmental non-profits
that align with our values and make the biggest impact possible. To
date, members have invested more than $270 million in environmental
solutions and we’re proud to play a small part in this.

Of course, there is more we can do, but every journey has a starting point and
this particular journey is about progress, not perfection.

We genuinely welcome feedback from our guests, so please get in touch if you can suggest more ways we can make a difference.
