5 great audio books for peaceful, screen-free road trips

Hurray! It's time to go on holiday! But first, the dreaded holiday traffic....long, hot hours in the car with kids can be hard work and start your family holiday off on the wrong foot. It's all too easy to reach for the devices to keep kids occupied and quiet but extended screen time can make kids even more irritable!

Audio books have become a secret weapon in our family to help us avoid too much screen time and our kids excitedly debate which we will listen too. A great audio book engages kids imaginations AND expands their language skills while keeping the drive peaceful and stress free for the adults. Another bonus? No mess, no preparation. Just plug and play. What a win!

Each year I buy a new audio book as a christmas present, just in time for the summer holidays. Let's be honest, it's really a gift for myself!

Here are our 5 favourite audio books:

1 The Roald Dahl Audio Collection

In this collection five splendiferous stories are brought to life by Roald Dahl himself. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Enormous Crocodile and The Magic Finger!

2. How to train your dragon  by Cressida Cowell

Listen to the books that inspired the How to Train Your Dragon films read by David Tennant. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was an awesome sword-fighter, a dragon-whisperer and the greatest Viking Hero who ever lived. But it wasn't always like that. In fact, in the beginning, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was the most put upon Viking you'd ever seen. Not loud enough to make himself heard at dinner with his father, Stoick the Vast; not hard enough to beat his chief rival, Snotlout, at Bashyball, the number one school sport and CERTAINLY not stupid enough to go into a cave full of dragons to find a pet... It's time for Hiccup to learn how to be a Hero.

3. The World of David Walliams story collection

Five screamingly funny stories from number one bestselling children's author David Walliams and read by the author himself. The Boy in the dress, Mr Stink, Gansta Granny, Billionaire Boy and Rat Burger.

4. Harry Maclary story collection

The eight classic stories on this bumper CD collection are all set to music and read fabulously by Dr Who star David Tennant.

5. The Cat in the Hat and other stories Dr Zeus

With his unique combination of hilarious stories and riotous rhymes, Dr. Seuss has been delighting young children and helping them learn to read for over fifty years. With mad music and zany sound effects, these four crazy tales are even more fun read aloud!
